A weight lowered down the anchor line.

Sailors drop a kellet partway down the rode so the pull on the anchor stays flat instead of lifting. An anchor that lifts breaks out, and the boat drifts. The weight takes the snatch out of the gusts and holds her steady, on an even keel, when the wind picks up.
