How to block Instagram on your phone and computer

Instagram is the one most people underestimate, because each visit feels short. It is the number of visits that does the damage.

Short answer

Block the app and instagram.com at the same time, on every device, then add a short cool-down on unblocking. Twenty minutes is usually enough: the pull is frequent rather than strong.

Step by step

How to do it

01Step

Block the app on your phone

This is the one that matters. Deleting the app does not count, because reinstalling takes fifteen seconds and you have done it before.

02Step

Block instagram.com everywhere

Otherwise the habit simply moves to the browser, which is arguably worse because the web version has no time limits at all.

03Step

Include the in-app browsers

Links opened inside other apps use their own browser view. Device-level filtering covers those; a browser extension does not.

04Step

Schedule the hours you lose

For most people that is the first hour of the day and the last two. Put those behind a schedule and stop deciding.

05Step

Set a short cool-down

Long enough to break the reflex, short enough that you will not resent it. Fifteen to twenty minutes kills the automatic reach.

Why deleting the app never works

Everyone has tried it. The account still exists, the app is one tap from the store, and reinstalling feels like nothing because it is nothing. There is no friction in the path at all.

A block is different from a deletion because the obstacle stays after your resolve has faded. That is the entire point: you are not trying to be more determined, you are trying to make the easy path unavailable.

Reels are the part that gets you

Checking a message takes twenty seconds. Reels is an infinite feed with autoplay, and it is what turns a quick look into forty minutes. If you only block one thing about Instagram, the short-video feed is the one doing the damage.

Instagram does not let you switch Reels off, which means the only reliable lever is blocking the app itself during the hours you cannot afford to lose.

Kellet blocks the app and the site together, on a schedule you set, with a cool-down on turning it back on.
Straight answers

Common questions

Can I block Instagram but still get DMs?
Not within the app itself. If messages genuinely matter, a scheduled window is a better answer than leaving it open all day.
Will people know I have blocked it?
No. The block is on your device and nothing is announced to anyone. Your account behaves normally from the outside.
What about the web version on my work laptop?
Block it there too, or you have simply relocated the habit. One account covers every device you install Kellet on.
