How to retrain the TikTok algorithm
TikTok reads behaviour faster and more aggressively than anything else, which means it goes wrong quickly and can be corrected quickly.
Swipe away within the first second, long-press and choose "Not interested", and never watch to the end out of curiosity. TikTok also offers a full refresh of the For You feed in settings, which starts the recommendations over.
How to do it
Swipe within the first second
Watch time is the dominant signal on this platform and completion is the strongest version of it. Even three seconds registers as interest.
Long-press and mark it not interested
The long-press menu offers "Not interested" and, on many videos, options to hide content from that creator or using that sound. Use them every time rather than occasionally.
Do not rewatch, and do not send it to anyone
Replays and shares are two of the strongest positive signals in the system. Sharing something to complain about it is still a share.
Refresh the For You feed
TikTok has a setting that resets your recommendations and rebuilds them from scratch. It is in Settings under Content preferences. This is the closest thing to a clean slate without a new account.
Rebuild deliberately in the first hour
Straight after a refresh the feed is unusually plastic. Search for and watch what you actually want, because whatever you do in that first session weighs heavily.
Why TikTok goes wrong faster than other feeds
Most platforms lean on your social graph: who you follow, what your friends do. TikTok leans almost entirely on behaviour, which means a handful of accidental long watches can redirect the whole feed within a day.
The upside is symmetrical. Consistent corrective behaviour also lands within days rather than weeks.
Restricted Mode is not a content filter
TikTok offers a restricted mode that reduces some content, and it is easily switched off and far from comprehensive. Treat it as a mild preference rather than protection.
If you need something reliable, that is a device-level job rather than an in-app setting.
