How to install Kellet on Windows
About five minutes, most of which is waiting for a download. Kellet blocks nothing until this is done, so it is the one step worth doing first.
Download the installer from your account, run it and approve the administrator prompt, then sign in with the email address you registered with. The PC appears in your account straight away and starts enforcing whatever rules you have set.
How to do it
Download the installer from your account
Sign in at kellet.app, open Devices and choose Enrol a device. The download is a standard Windows installer. Downloading it from your own account rather than a link someone sent you is worth doing on principle: this is software that will hold onto your machine.
Run it and approve the administrator prompt
Windows will ask for administrator rights once. Kellet needs them to install the service that does the blocking, because anything running as an ordinary program can be closed by an ordinary program. This is the same prompt any antivirus or VPN shows on install.
Sign in with the address you registered with
The app asks you to sign in. Use the same email address as your account, otherwise the device enrols against nothing and none of your rules follow it.
Check the device appears in your account
Open Devices in your account on any browser. The PC should be listed and reporting within a few seconds. If it is not there, the sign-in did not complete rather than the install failing.
Restart once, if you were asked to
Some Windows versions want a restart to finish registering the network filter. Kellet says so plainly if it needs one. Until then it is installed but not yet filtering everything.
If Windows blocks the installer
SmartScreen sometimes warns about installers it has not seen many times before. If you get "Windows protected your PC", choose More info and then Run anyway, having checked that the file came from your own account rather than a link.
If your work laptop is managed by an IT department, the install may be refused outright. That is the machine doing its job, and there is no way round it that is not also a way round every other rule on that machine.
What it can and cannot see
- It sees what it blocks.Sites and apps that hit one of your rules, and enough of the address to tell you what happened.
- It does not read your files.Detection runs on the device, on what is drawn on screen. What gets recorded is the blocked event and your web history, and those land in your own account where nobody reads them but you and anyone you have invited.
- Your partner sees the same summary you do.Nothing more. Partners cannot change rules, unlock a device or browse your history at will.
Removing it later
Uninstalling is deliberately not instant. You ask from your account, the cool-down you chose runs, and only then does the uninstaller work. That delay is the entire product; a blocker you can remove in ten seconds is a bookmark.
You are always able to remove it. It just takes as long as you decided it should take, back when you were thinking clearly.
