Accountability partners

Invite someone to see your activity and, only if you choose, to change your settings. A partner can end a device lock early only when you ask, and can never end a cooldown early.

Inviting a partner

  1. Open Partners

In the left-hand menu, under Accountability.

  2. Type their email address

Under Invite an accountability partner. They receive an email invitation.

  3. Choose what they may change

Under What should they be able to do? Everything is off to begin with, which makes them view only.

  4. Send the invitation

Choose Send invite. They have seven days to accept, using the email address you sent it to.

What a partner sees

Every partner sees your flagged content, web history and app usage, from every device, read only. Seeing is not a choice; changing is.

Where you have chosen to keep a blurred picture with a detection, only you can open it. A partner sees the entry, never the picture.

What a partner can change

Four permissions, each off until you turn it on:

  • Change your rules.Block or unblock sites, apps and categories on any of your devices.
  • Change your schedules.Decide when a device is limited and when it is free.
  • Change your consequences.Set what happens when a rule is broken, and how long it lasts.
  • Change your cool-downs.Set how long changes have to wait.
Anything a partner loosens still waits out your cooldown, and you are told about every change they make.

Asking a partner to end a device lock

If one of your devices is locked, by a schedule or by a consequence, you can ask your partners to end the lock early. Press Request unlock on the device’s lock screen, or Ask a partner to end the lock on the device’s page in Kellet, and add a reason if you like. You cannot end the lock yourself.

Every partner is told straight away, by email and on their phone, whatever your alert settings say, and any one of them can approve or decline. No permission is needed for this; every partner can answer. You can withdraw the request while it is waiting, and you are told what they decided, with anything they wrote.

If a partner approves, the lock on that device ends straight away. A schedule’s window is stood down for that one occasion only, so the next window locks as usual; a consequence ladder keeps its place, so the next lock is as long as it would have been; and an internet cut from a consequence ends too. If the lock ends on its own before anyone answers, the request lapses, so an answer can never be saved for a later lock.

What a partner can never do

  • End a device lock you have not asked them to end.
  • End a cooldown early, or shorten one that is already running.

Changing access, or removing a partner

Beside each partner, Change access lets you turn permissions on or off; it takes effect on their very next action. Revoke access removes them once you confirm.

A pending invitation shows Invite pending and can be changed or cancelled before it is accepted. You can have as many partners as you like, with one open invitation per email address.

Resend emails a pending invitation again, with the same link, and gives them another seven days from then. You can resend it once every five minutes, up to three times in a day.

What partners are told

You are told when a partner accepts, declines, lets an invitation expire, steps back, changes one of your settings, or deletes their Kellet account. Each partner chooses for themselves whether those alerts reach them by email or on their phone.

  • A blocked content summary, daily or weekly as they choose in their own Notification settings: how many items Kellet blocked, the top category, and the last five. Never any pictures.
  • Copies of your alerts, when Send partners a copy of my alerts is on in Notification settings. It is on to begin with.
  • Always:when a device is removed, goes quiet, or comes back online, and when you ask them to end a device lock.

Partners and stewards

A steward is a different arrangement. You can have one, and they manage all of your rules, schedules, consequences and cooldowns for you: while you have a steward, those pages are read only for you and say Managed by your steward. They also decide what happens to your waiting changes.

A steward does not see your activity; a partner does. Stewards are invited from the Steward invitations page, accept by signing in with the invited address within seven days, and can be removed with Revoke steward, which hands management straight back to you.

Common questions

Does my partner have to pay?
No. Partners never pay, and do not need a plan or a device of their own to support you.
Can my partner turn off my blocking?
Only if you have given them Change your rules, and even then anything they loosen waits out your cooldown and you are told.
What should I ask of a partner?
Somebody who will notice, and say something, without making it a bigger deal than it is. Telling them what you actually want from them, a weekly check-in, or a word only when their summary shows something, makes it much easier for them to help.
