How cooldowns work

Kellet has two cooldowns: one for loosening your rules and one for removing Kellet from a device. Raising either applies now; lowering either waits.

The two cooldowns

Both start at Off. Choose from Off, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day or 3 days; the uninstall cooldown also offers 1 week. They are separate on purpose, so a short rule cooldown never shortens the wait on removing Kellet.

  • Rule cooldown. How long any loosening of your rules, schedules or consequences has to wait before it counts.
  • Uninstall cooldown. How long a device has to wait, after you ask, before Kellet can be removed from it.

Raising and lowering a cooldown

Raising a cooldown applies straight away. If you had a reduction waiting, it is dropped.

Lowering one is itself a loosening, so it waits out the cooldown you are lowering. Going from 6 hours to 30 minutes takes 6 hours. You cannot shorten your way out in less time than you already committed to. While it waits, the card shows Change to the new value and a countdown, with Cancel.

If you pick a different shorter value while one is waiting, Kellet asks whether to Replace the change you are waiting on? Replacing it starts the full wait again; Keep waiting leaves the first one running.

The queue

Everything waiting for your cooldown is listed under Waiting to take effect on the Cooldowns page. The number of waiting changes shows beside Cooldowns in the left-hand menu.

Each entry says what it will change, what it gives up, and how long is left. When the wait is over the entry becomes ready and Apply lights up. Nothing applies itself: you press Apply, and you have 24 hours to do it. After that the entry shows Lapsed and you would need to ask again.

Cancel is always immediate. Each rule can only have one change waiting at a time. The wait is fixed at the moment you ask, so lowering your cooldown later does not speed up changes already queued.

What waits and what does not

  • Applies straight away:blocking more, adding a lock, turning an escalation on, raising a cooldown, and cancelling anything that is waiting.
  • Waits out the rule cooldown:unblocking or allowing something, turning off Shorts and Reels blocking, turning off a schedule or an escalation, making a consequence gentler or a lock shorter, turning a detection setting down, removing or loosening an entry on your blocked applications, releasing an app Kellet blocked automatically, and lowering the rule cooldown.
  • Waits out the uninstall cooldown:requesting removal of Kellet from a device, and lowering the uninstall cooldown.

Uninstall protection

The lower half of the Cooldowns page lists each device and whether Kellet can be removed from it. Request removal starts the uninstall cooldown for that device; when it finishes, the device stays removable for one hour and then protects itself again.

If you have a steward

Your steward manages your cooldowns, so this page is read-only for you except for Uninstall protection. You can still request removal of a device, and it waits out the cooldown your steward set.

Common questions

What cooldown should I choose?
Long enough to outlast the moment you want to undo something. Setup recommends 6 hours for rules. If you are unsure, start shorter: raising it later applies at once, while lowering it means waiting out whatever you set.
Can a partner end a cooldown early?
No. A partner can never end a cooldown early, or shorten one that is already running, whatever access you have given them.
Why doesn’t a change apply by itself when the wait is over?
So that it is still your decision when the time comes. If you no longer want it, do nothing and it lapses after 24 hours.
What happens with the cooldown set to Off?
Loosenings apply as soon as you make them, and nothing queues.
