The setup walkthrough

Five short steps that take a new account to a protected device: what to block, what happens when a rule is broken, your cooldown, a partner, and your first device.

The five steps

  1. Rules: choose what Kellet should block

Five switches: Adult content, Gambling and betting, Proxies and VPNs, Social networks and Dating apps. Only adult content is on to begin with. The full list of categories, plus the sites and apps you name yourself, lives on the Rules page. Press Looks right to move on.

  2. Consequences: what happens when Kellet blocks something

Pick what a blocked site does (show a blocked page, send the browser somewhere else, close the tab or close the browser), whether there is a way past the blocked page, what happens to an explicit image or video on a page you are allowed on, and whether a blocked app is closed or only monitored. The recommended answer is marked on each.

  3. Cool-down: how long unblocking should take

Choose None for now, 30 minutes, 6 hours (recommended) or 1 day. Kellet does not set one for you. This is your rule cooldown; the separate uninstall cooldown is set later on the Cooldowns page.

  4. Partner: someone to keep you honest (optional)

Type their email address and choose what, if anything, they may change. Everything starts switched off, so a partner you invite here can see your activity and change nothing. Skip - I’ll do this later moves on without inviting anyone.

  5. Devices: protect your first device

Pick Windows or Android. Windows gives you a Download Kellet for Windows button; Android gives you a pairing code. Keep the page open: it notices when the device connects and shows {name} is protected. Then add another device, or choose No, that’s everything.

Do the steps in any order

Each step name across the top is a link, so nothing is locked behind anything else. Finish later takes you to Overview with whatever you have done so far saved.

A brand new account is brought here once, automatically. After that, opening setup again resumes at the first step you have not finished.

The Finish setting up checklist

Until every step is done, a small checklist sits in the bottom-right corner of the app showing how many of the five are complete. Pick up where I left off opens the next unfinished step, and Hide this puts it away for good. It also folds down to a single bar if you just want it smaller.

The checklist stays off the Billing page and out of setup itself. Your account menu keeps a Finish setting up entry until everything, partner included, is done.

When a step says it will wait

Setup follows the same rule as the rest of Kellet. If something you choose here gives you more access than you have now, for example switching off a category you had on, or picking a shorter cooldown than your current one, it is queued behind your current cooldown instead of applying. The step tells you when that happens.

A new account has no cooldown, so the first time through nothing waits.

Common questions

Do I have to invite a partner?
No. The partner step is optional and you can skip it. You can invite someone later from the Partners page.
Can I change my answers later?
Yes. Every step is a shortcut to settings that have their own page: Rules, Consequences, Cooldowns, Partners and Devices. Stricter changes apply at once; anything looser waits out your cooldown.
Why is the device step last?
So that the device starts enforcing what you have just chosen the moment it connects, rather than running with defaults until you get round to the rules.
